A Lived Mishnah Series

Tisha B’Av & the Churban Through the Prism of the Mishnah

How the Mishnah records destruction, continuity, memory, and the halachic world that followed.

Few of the Tannaim lived while the Second Beis HaMikdash still stood, yet the Mikdash remained present throughout the Mishnah — in remembered ritual, altered practice, mourning, preservation and anticipation.

This series gathers 41 Mishnayos from all six Sedarim and arranges them in four movements: describing the destruction and its fasts; witnessing the changes that followed; identifying mitzvos that ceased or persisted; and tracing the ways the Churban reshaped continuing Jewish practice.

The journey

Four movements.

Remembering the rituals of the Beis HaMikdashHow the calendar was fixed, the berachos, the bechor, the purity laws — the line between “when the Bayis stood” and now.
The cosmic changesHow Chazal saw the destruction ripple through the natural world itself.
Mitzvos tied to the MikdashWhich ceased when it fell, and which still stand.
The Churban as an inflection pointHow the destruction reshaped halacha as a marker of time — and an anticipation of rebuilding.
