One who blows the shofar into a pit,
or into a cistern,
or into a great storage jar:
if he heard the sound of the shofar itself,
he has fulfilled his obligation.
And if he heard the shofar's echo,
he has not fulfilled it.
And so too, one who was passing behind a shul,
or whose house stood next to a shul,
and heard the sound of a shofar, or the sound of a megillah:
if he directed his heart to the mitzvah,
he has fulfilled his obligation,
and if he did not,
he has not fulfilled it.
Even though this one heard the shofar and that one heard it —
this one directed his heart, and that one did not direct his heart.
A reading aid, not an exact translation.

This English is a clause-by-clause rendering to help you follow the Hebrew. It is not word-for-word literal, and it is not a transcript of the recorded shiur — the audio carries explanation and context the translation deliberately leaves out.
