The rhythm of the year
Lunar months, solar seasons
Our months follow the moon, but Pesach must remain in the spring.
12 lunar months — about 354 days
A solar year — 365
So a lunar year loses 11 days
Which is why some years take a second Adar
The month itself
29 days, or 30
A lunar cycle runs past 29½ days, and a month cannot end halfway through a day.
29 days — chodesh chaser
30 days — chodesh malei
What the witnesses saw
The first visible sliver
The conjunction — the moon cannot be seen
Then a thin crescent, shortly after sunset
And they travel to the central Beis Din

Why that matters
A complete communal system
Not one isolated courtroom act.
Ordinary people willing to look, and to travel
Testimony that could be trusted, weighed by an authoritative Sanhedrin
And a reliable way to carry the result
And it was tested
Under pressure
What if there were enough witnesses already, or the moon was obvious to all?
What if false witnesses were hired, or false fires lit?
What if the testimony seemed impossible?
What if a great chacham disagreed?
